B     projects for big roundabouts in Ibbenbüren

B 3  : hands

projectteam Szilard Banga / Banat Ja Romania

The “hands”- project consists of an installation of hands, each one colored and customized in a different style, showing different signs and directions. The concept is based on the common habit of showing directions with hand gestures. From this start we got to a Babel of hands showing contradictory directions, various colors and textures or patterns, imaginary or based on each of the participants` national/regional background. This could mean a mixture of different cultures brought together, with their similarities and contradictions /conflicts, each with its own signs and languages.

The prototype for the project was made with the contribution of each member from the Romanian group and participants from the other groups. The hands were made out of painted cardboard, which eventually would be translated into fiberglass or plexiglass if the project will be implemented in a real situation. Of course, the participants who made the model, will probably get to design the real size installation and with some outdoor paints it will keep the brightness and purity throughout the years.

The jury interpreted the form-concept, that the hands show into different directions = babel of hands -  , as a typical European sign of  diversity  and as …maybe a hidden critic of chaotic democratic procedures in Europe.

Students / pupils groups from Poland and the Netherlands , who will join the project from September 08 on, are invited to create different forms of their own hand - objects  to add to the common sculpture and to develop an ambitious painting concept, which is based on the own regional/national (youth- ) culture, signs and symbols of own identity in Europe.
